  • I went back and listened to the podcast again, and I usually do start with 100+BB. I guess I should have gone to the crux of what bothers me about these types of tables. I am trying to play deep enough to keep the spec hands in my arsenal, but when I open raise from late position for 10 in a 1-2 game with, say, a middle pair, just as sure as hell, some short stack is going to shove with his 55 dollars, and I’m not getting the odds I need to set mine. This happens over and over, and it seems like there is always two or three of these annoying little dick gnats waiting to pounce, and when they do I’m on tilt for the next few hands.
    Is there any way to handle these horseflies? I’ve wrestled with this problem for several years, and haven’t come up with anything.
  • I think the first way of 'dealing with them' might be simply to do some mental game work. Everyone is trying to win. No point in getting mad at them.
    Beyond that, welcome to pseudo-tournament poker. If you have short-stackers at the table who are competent and you make a standard open with hands like medium pairs, they should be 3bet-jamming over you. So for the truly speculative hands you just have to tighten up with shorties left to act. The medium pairs you need to do some work with a Nash calculator to see which ones you can call off at what depth. Basically if you don't open or raise-fold the larger medium pairs, you're giving up too much, but the exact calling ranges depend on precise stack depth. You're not looking to set mine, you'll sometimes have sufficient equity against a short-stacker's 3bet-shove range.
